Is the minimum a fee? Do I lose that money?

No. The minimum is simply the smallest amount you can load in one top-up. It is not a charge. The full amount you enter goes into your balance and is yours to spend on laundry.

Can I get unused balance back?

Yes. You can withdraw any remaining balance to the payment method you topped up with at any time. A small administration fee, which varies by currency, is deducted from the amount returned. See current fees by market: link

How much is the minimum top-up?

The amount is set to roughly cover two cycles at local average pricing, so it varies by market. In UK it is £5.00, in Germany it is €5. Full list by currency

Why is there a minimum top-up amount?

The amount is set to roughly cover two wash cycles, so for most people it is simply what you would spend on your next visit anyway, not money set aside for nothing. Card payments also carry a small fixed cost that does not shrink with the amount, so keeping top-ups above a certain size keeps the service affordable to run.

Who decides to use Airwallet, and did I agree to it?

The property owner or operator sets up the payment system for a shared laundry room, in the same way they choose the machines themselves. Using the app does mean accepting Airwallet's general terms and conditions, the same as with any app. That is separate from being tied into anything: if you pay as you go, no subscription is created, and no charge happens to your card unless you actively choose to top up (if you ever turn on auto-refill, you can switch it off again at any time). Any unused balance can always be withdrawn (see above).
